The Barefoot Book of Animal Tales From Around the World retold by Naomi Adler
Nine folktales from around the world are included in this anthology of animal tales. With stories of courage, selflessness, difficult decisions, and more, these tales will inspire great discussions as a family or as a classroom of students. The book comes with two audio CDs of the stories. I recommend this book for children approximately 7-11 years old.

How Far Do You Love Me? by Lulu Delacre
This is a simple story of a parent expressing their love to their child. Instead of being asked how much are they loved, the children ask how far. The answers stretch from the peaks of the Himalayas to the depths of the Great Barrier Reef. A world map in the back of the book shows the location of each illustration - there's at least one destination on every continent! (USA, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Peru, France, Switzerland, Egypt, Tanzania, India, Vietnam, Australia, and Antarctica)

Whoever You Are by Mem Fox
This is a beautiful book written in rhyme that tells children how even though there are differences between them and other children around the world, the things that matter are the same between them: “Joys are the same, and love is the same. Pain is the same, and
blood is the same. Whoever you are, wherever you are, all over the world."

Skin Again by Bell Hooks
An important book! It rhythmically illustrates how the skin we are in only tells a small piece about who we are. It's what is underneath our skin that truly matters, who we are in our hearts and in our minds, celebrating the stories of who we each are. "The skin I'm in is just a covering. It cannot tell my story. The skin I'm in is just a covering. If you want to know who I am, you have got to come inside and open your heart way wide."

Tan to Tamarind by Malathi Michelle Iyengar
In this book, Iyengar and Jamel Akib, the illustrator, not only portray the beauty of the various tones of the color brown, but also the beauty of being a child, a person, of that color. "Brown. My face. Milk-tea brown....Brown. Your face. Sienna brown or coca brown, café con leche
brown or radiant ocher brown....We are brown. We are beautiful."

Let's Talk About Race by Julius Lester
This is a phenomenal must-read book! Lester writes as if he is sitting down with a group of children (the readers) and talking to them right there. He tells them about himself, he asks them about themselves. He invites a dialogue from the start. Lester continues to tell the reader more about himself, illustrating how he is a story. Each one of us is a story. Our race is part of who we are, but only part of our story. We need to listen to each other's stories, understand each other's stories, enjoy each other's stories. My children and I were captivated as we read and interacted with this book.

Written in a catchy rap-style rhythm, this book points out that although we may look differently from one another: straight hair vs. curly hair, brown eyes vs. blue eyes, long legs vs. short legs, we are all the same. We are all people and we can enjoy one another! The illustrations depict children of a variety of races playing together.
