The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer
The true story of William Kamkwamba who, at age fourteen, built a windmill out of junk, bringing electricity to his drought-ridden village in Malawi. This inspiring story shows children that they can help make the world a better place now, and don't have to wait until they "grow up."

Galimoto by Karen Lynn Williams
I haven't read this story yet, but it's a Reading Rainbow book which hasn't steered me wrong yet! It looks like a sweet story of a determined little boy who builds his own toy car out of wires: a galimoto.
