Abuela's Weave by Omar S. Casteneda
Set in a rural village of Guatemala, this endearing story is about a young girl, Esperanza, who is learning to hand-weave from her grandmother (her "abuela"). Their family needs their weavings to be sold at the market, but because of Abuela's large birthmark on her face, many people are afraid of her. Esperanza must be the one to go, and although she is scared, she bravely walks to the market and sets up a tiny space to sell their wares amongst all of the beautiful machine-made tapestries hanging throughout the street. Thankfully customers see that the most beautiful weavings are Esperanza's hand-made ones, and she is filled with joy and pride for her family.
