African - Non-Country Specific or Multi-cultural:
Africa Calling by Danny Adlerman
Beautiful collage illustrations using natural materials compliment the rhyming text about numerous animals in Africa. This book is also a very fun song and can be found on Danny's children's album, "One Size Fits All." (Contact me if interested in purchasing this book as I can do so directly from the author!)

African Animals ABC by Stella Blackstone
An African animal is paired with an action on each page, which makes it great for "performing" with kids as it's read aloud. This is a great book to use when teaching about verbs. I love the illustrations!

Ashanti to Zulu: African Traditions by Margaret W. Musgrove
A beautiful ABC book of African tribes from all over the continent. This book won the 1977 Caldecott Medal, and when you see the painstakingly accurate and detailed illustrations of each of the 26 distinct tribes presented, you'll understand why. The text is written in paragraph form and would be best suited for upper elementary aged children.

Honey...Honey...Lion! A Story From Africa by Jan Brett
Although I don't like stories to be set "in Africa" as if Africa is a country instead of a continent, this is a fun tale of adventure as a honey guide (bird) sets out to teach the selfish honey badger a lesson he won't forget!

African Acrostics: A Word in Edgeways Avis Harley and Deborah Noyes
The photographs in this book were taken mostly in Namibia, and are wonderfully paired with delightfully good poetry!

Jambo, Watoto! by Marsha Heatwole
A mother cheetah leaves her four cubs to search for food, and while she's away they encounter numerous animals who try and persuade them to come out. They refuse, and in the end, the mother comes back to them sharing the high praise that the other animals gave to her about her cubs' attributes. This story is set in West Africa and is sprinkled with Swahili words. (The title is an example and means Hello, Children!) And the illustrations are really beautiful!

African Tales: A Barefoot Collection by Gcina Mhlophe - Mhlope is from Durbin, South Africa
There are eight stories in this collection from eight different countries (Ghana, Senegal, Lesotho, Namibia, Malawi, Sudan, Swaziland, and Ethiopia), and included with each story is a two-page spread of information about the country where the story is from. This is a book for upper elementary children. (The folk art illustrations are beautiful, but just as a heads-up, there are naked breasts depicted. Also, the first story refers to the main character's "real" parents when talking about her biological parents. The publishers informed me that this anti-adoption language will be fixed in future reprints.)
